Often this destruction was achieved by burning the papers or books in question, which would generally draw attention and required time, resources, and labour.

■ The earliest known invention and successful application of a paper shredder can be dated back to 1935, Germany, by Adolf Ehinger. He was inspired by a hand-cranked pasta maker to create a machine to shred sensitive anti-Nazi literature material that could get him into trouble. He added a motor to power his shredder device that sat in a wooden frame, large enough to shred paper, and capitalized on his creation by selling shredders throughout the 1940s to various government entities, embassies, and organizations.

■ It was during the Cold War era of the 1950s, that his device gained immense popularity and continues to shred paper to date under the name of Krug & Priester.
